GOP Senators Abandon Trump

In a surprising turn of events, a number of Republican Senators are now standing in support of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis after former President Donald Trump repeatedly attacked him about running in 2024.

According to The Hill, while a majority of Republicans are still standing in favor of Trump, a significant number of Republicans also believe Trump is holding other Republicans back based on how the midterm elections went.

The Republicans who are standing in support of DeSantis are saying that it’s DeSantis’ decision alone on whether or not he will run and Trump should stop threatening him by constantly referring to him as “disloyal”.

Republican Senator John Cornyn explained, “He ran an impressive reelection campaign for governor from an important state. It looks to me like he’s polling well. I think we need some new blood and I think he’d probably qualify.”

Then when Cornyn was asked if Trump was right for calling DeSantis “disloyal” Cornyn laughed and said, “No, no, I don’t think so.”

Republican Senator Cynthia Lummis stated, “I expect to see a number of Republican candidates for president and a number of them had President Trump’s endorsement so I don’t see it as an act of disloyalty to run for president, even people on the president’s cabinet may get in this race.”

Later adding, “So, it’s not a matter of disloyalty. The person who best articulates a future agenda for the country will emerge from Republican primary and it’s not a foregone conclusion who that will be.”
