Judge Threatens Trump
On Tuesday, a New York judge who is overseeing the case against former President Donald Trump by the Manhattan district attorney, cautioned him to avoid making any social media posts that could potentially encourage violent behavior.
According to The Hill, Judge Juan Merchan issued the warning in response to comments made by Donald Trump last month, in which the former President called for protests and implied that his indictment could lead to violent consequences. The judge cautioned Trump against making such statements, which could incite others to engage in harmful behavior.
During the arraignment on Tuesday, Todd Blanche, Donald Trump’s attorney, stated that the former president had reacted strongly and was feeling both frustrated and upset by the request made of him.
Blanche explained, “Imagine anybody in this courtroom who was in that position. Every one of these posts are not threats.”
Additionally, Blanche took issue with Michael Cohen’s public appearances, citing him as the individual who made the hush money payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 that ultimately led to the criminal charges brought against Donald Trump on Tuesday. Cohen had previously served as Trump’s personal attorney and trusted confidant for many years.
The judge informed Donald Trump’s legal team that he did not agree with their stance on the former president’s social media activity. However, the judge also requested that the Manhattan district attorney’s office communicate with their witnesses regarding the matter.
Assistant District Attorney Chris Conroy responded, stating that their ability to control the situation is limited. Conroy further stated that they have already spoken with Michael Cohen regarding the matter, and will continue to do so as necessary.
Donald Trump entered a plea of not guilty to 34 felony charges of falsifying business records.
