Supreme Court Allows Noncitizens To Vote
In a move that has angered Americans, the Vermont Supreme Court has just ruled that noncitizen residents can continue to vote in municipal elections in Vermont’s capital city of Montpelier.
The Vermont Supreme Court is claiming that noncitizens voting in local elections does not violate the state constitution.
According to Newsmax, the Supreme Court wrote, “The statute allowing noncitizens to vote in local Montpelier elections does not violate Chapter II, § 42 because that constitutional provision does not apply to local elections.”
If you haven’t been noticing this is happening slowly in a number of states across the country and could soon become a real issue if they try to push the voting rights even further such as in national elections and more.
The Democrat-controlled Vermont Legislature ruled in 2021 two different bills to change the municipal charters of Montpelier and Winooski. This made it so that legal residents who are not U.S. citizens got the ability to vote in local elections.
The Republican National Committee immediately files lawsuits over this and lost their battle in court.
Montpelier City Council President Jack McCullough reacted to the news and said, “We are gratified that our choice to welcome participation by all members of our community has been upheld by the Supreme Court. Our Declaration of Independence says that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and I believe that includes all our residents. I hope this will encourage more eligible voters to register, vote, and fully participate in our democratic institutions.”
